Dr Dan’s Management Tips for September 2010

 

  • Maiden heifers need supplemental concentrates to ensure growth rates and body conditioning score are maintained at desired targets until the seventh month of pregnancy.
  • Get your herd scanned now for accurate ageing,sexing and identification of twins.
  • Ensure cows on lush grass get sufficient fibre in the total diet to avoid high passage rates.
  • Ensure suckler cows calving now have adequate magnesium intakes to avoid grass tetany.
  • Ensure calves weaned from suckler cows are vaccinated against intra-tracheal diseases such as pneumonia prior to sales this Autumn.
  • Control  lungworm in young cattle. Treat regularly, but allow time for some immunity to develop.
